Simple MD Viewer Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 20, 2026
Vessk Inc. (“we,” “our,” or “us”) establishes this Privacy Policy to explain how information is handled in the Windows application Simple MD Viewer (the “app”).
1. About the App
The app is a desktop application that opens Markdown files specified by users and provides on-device viewing, tabs, recent-file history, Mermaid diagrams, print preview, printing, and theme settings.
Markdown files are read, parsed, and rendered on the user’s device.
2. Information Accessed by the App
The app accesses the following information in response to user actions to provide its features.
| Item | Content and purpose |
|---|---|
| Markdown files | The app reads the contents and paths of files specified through file selection, file association, drag and drop, recent-file history, launch arguments, or similar actions. While a file is open, the app may monitor it for changes and reload it. |
| Files referenced by relative path | The app accesses images and links referenced by a Markdown file to resolve them. References are generally limited to locations under the folder containing the open Markdown file. |
| Background image | The app reads an image selected as a background, validates it, and resizes it when necessary. The original image is not modified. |
| Installed fonts | The app retrieves installed font family names to present font choices. |
| Printer information | The app retrieves available printer names, the default printer, and related information from Windows for printer selection and print settings. |
| Clipboard | When the user copies a code block or other content, the app writes the selected content to the clipboard. The app does not read existing clipboard contents. |
Except as described in the next section, Markdown contents, relative image contents, complete printer lists, and complete installed-font lists are not stored in the app’s settings file.
3. Information Stored on the Device
The app stores the following information on the user’s device to restore state and preserve user preferences.
| Item | Content |
|---|---|
| Last opened file and open tabs | Local filesystem paths |
| Recent files | Local filesystem paths and last-opened times |
| Language and general settings | Language, external-image permission, tab-close confirmation, window behavior, and related choices |
| Display settings | App zoom, text size, heading scale, line spacing, content margins, and body, heading, and code font settings. If the user selects an installed font, its font family name is stored. |
| Theme settings | Selected theme, additional themes, and custom theme names, base themes, and color settings |
| Background image | Enabled state, opacity, veil, blur, related settings, and a processed copy of the selected image |
| Theme entitlement | Minimal information required to unlock theme-related features, such as an expiration time |
| Print settings | Paper, orientation, margins, typography, header, footer, last selected printer name, and per-printer settings such as copies, color, and duplex mode |
| Window state | Open tabs and last selected file for each window |
Settings are stored as viewer-settings.json in the per-user Windows app-data area. The usual location is in the following form (<user name> and <Windows app management name> vary by environment).
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Packages\<Windows app management name>\LocalCache\Roaming\com.vessk.simplemdviewer\viewer-settings.json
If the settings file cannot be read, a backup named viewer-settings.invalid.json may be created in the same location for recovery and diagnosis. Processed background images are stored in the backgrounds folder under the same location. For the app installed from Microsoft Store, Windows manages this location as a per-user area for this app.
4. No Automatic Transmission of Markdown Files or Local Data to Our Servers
The app does not automatically transmit any of the following to our servers: Markdown contents; local file contents; file paths; viewing history; display, theme, and print settings; background images; operation logs; crash reports; and usage statistics.
The app does not include advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, telemetry transmission, or automatic crash reporting.
However, communications described below may occur when a user uses an external image, external link, printing, Microsoft Store feature, or support channel.
5. External Images, External Links, and Printing
External-image loading is off by default. When it is off, external images in Markdown are blocked and displayed as placeholders. If the user allows external images, the app connects to internet image addresses referenced by the Markdown file to display those images.
When a user opens an external link in a Markdown file, the app opens it through the operating system, default browser, email app, or similar application. Supported external URL schemes primarily include http, https, and mailto.
When connecting to an external image or link, standard connection information such as the IP address, user agent, and access time may be sent to the third-party server. Connections do not pass through our servers and are governed by the destination’s privacy policy. Communications over http may not be encrypted.
When printing, print content is passed to the Windows printing system and the printer selected by the user. If the user selects a network printer or external print service, that operator’s data practices may apply. Printed content is not transmitted to our servers.
6. Microsoft Store Add-ons and Purchase Information
If Microsoft Store add-on features are offered in the app, the app connects to Microsoft Store to purchase or verify time-limited access to theme-related or similar features.
Purchases, payments, order history, license verification, and refunds are processed by Microsoft. We do not obtain complete payment information, such as credit card numbers, through the app. The app may access product IDs, license status, expiration times, and other minimal information required to unlock features and may store part of that information on the device. We may receive information from Microsoft as necessary for sales and settlement.
For information about Microsoft’s practices, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
7. Security, Retention, and Deletion of On-device Information
On-device information is stored in a per-user Windows app-data area and is subject to operating-system access controls. We cannot remotely access, view, or delete information stored on a user’s device.
On-device information remains until the user changes or deletes it or until the app data is removed. Users can separately delete recent-file history or a background image in the app. The Delete All Local Data feature deletes locally stored recent history, open-tab state, display, print, and theme settings, custom themes, theme-entitlement information, processed background images, settings backups, and other local app data, and restores the app to its initial state. This operation does not delete the user’s Markdown files or original background images.
When disposing of, transferring, or sharing a device, users should delete app data using this feature or an appropriate Windows feature as needed.
8. Support Inquiries
If a user contacts us by email or through our support form, we may collect:
- Name, phonetic spelling of the name, and email address;
- Product, inquiry category, and inquiry details;
- Screenshots or other files voluntarily attached by the user; and
- Communication and access information, such as message times, email headers, and, when the support form is used, connection source IP address and browsing environment.
We use this information to respond to inquiries, verify identity, provide support, investigate issues, improve products and services, prevent misuse, comply with law, and protect legal rights. For users in the EU, EEA, or United Kingdom, our legal bases are performance of a contract or pre-contractual steps, our or a third party’s legitimate interests, compliance with legal obligations, and consent where required.
We generally retain inquiry information for three years after the last communication and then delete it. We may retain it for longer when necessary to comply with law, handle disputes, or protect legal rights.
Access to inquiry information is limited to our officers and personnel who need it for their work and service providers subject to confidentiality and data-protection obligations. We may permit hosting, email, anti-spam, delivery, maintenance, or technical-investigation providers or contractors to process information only as necessary. We do not sell personal information or share it for third-party behavioral advertising.
Our website support form may use Google reCAPTCHA to prevent spam and Cloudflare services for secure delivery and protection against unauthorized access. When the form is displayed or submitted, connection source IP address, browsing environment, access time, and similar technical information may be processed by those services as part of normal web communication and only as necessary to provide those services. See the Google Privacy Policy and Cloudflare Privacy Policy for details.
9. Privacy Rights
Subject to applicable law, users may have the right to request notice of purpose, access, correction, supplementation, deletion, suspension of use, restriction of processing, data portability, or objection regarding inquiry information or other personal information we hold about them. To submit a request, contact us at the address below and provide the email address used for the inquiry and the nature of the request. We may reasonably verify identity to prevent impersonation.
We respond within the period required by applicable law. We generally respond to requests from users in the EU, EEA, or United Kingdom within one month and notify the user of the reason if an extension is required or we cannot comply. Users may also lodge a complaint with the data protection supervisory authority responsible for their place of residence.
We cannot disclose or remotely delete information stored only on the user’s device and not held by us. Users should use the in-app deletion controls described above.
10. Children
The app is not a service designed specifically to collect personal information from children. A minor who submits personal information to support should obtain parental consent where required by the laws of the minor’s place of residence.
